Seasonal Depression

Is this really a “thing?”  Unfortunately, it is.

We all have the holiday bliss and hustle and bustle going on when the season starts, right? What happens when things start to dwindle down, we are exhausted!

For some, they don’t have family, or friends around or even a holiday mindset which can lead to depression.

Keep in mind as daylight savings is upon us our days and nights change significantly (in most areas).  Starting in November our nights that used be daylight until 9 pm are now dark at 5:30 pm…ugh!  In March, our days are so long, and we love all the daytime to get “stuff” done or
to enjoy some fun events while it’s warm and sunny.

Seasonal depression increases often for many because of the cold and gloomy season. Circumstances are different for everyone, feelings surface during the holidays that are generally suppressed any other time of the year. While there is no specific reason, or clinical evaluation to add onto seasonal depression, it is very real.  For many, the questions arise, “why do I feel this way?” “What can I do differently to make this season a healthy one?”

Here are some tips to get through seasonal depression:

  • Get outside when the sun is shining.
  • While it may still be a little cold, the sun is still able to reduce the melatonin and lift your spirits.
  • Refocus – go for a walk, go to the gym, or you could begin journaling.
  • If money is tight, you can sit by the window with a warm cup of hot chocolate, herbal tea or coffee and reflect on all the good that is happening around you or watch a funny movie. Laughter is always a healthy option!
  • Get a good night’s sleep.  Try to keep a regular sleep schedule.

As a friendly reminder, be kind to yourself and others.  Pay attention to your mind, body, and spirit.  Depression, seasonal or otherwise, is not a one size fits all.  Your own self-care is a priority, and it will not match what people see on social media. Social media is not always truthful.

You are not alone, you may feel that way, however there are millions of people feeling the same way you do, remember…YOU DO YOU and If what you are doing is making you happy, and healthier then, you keep doing you!!

The above tips are only suggestions, if you need to seek medical attention, always consult with your physician if you have any questions or concerns.
