Is this really a “thing?”  Unfortunately, it is.

We all have the holiday bliss and hustle and bustle going on when the season starts, right? What happens when things start to dwindle down, we are exhausted!

For some, they don’t have family, or friends around or even a holiday mindset which can lead to depression.

Keep in mind as daylight savings is upon us our days and nights change significantly (in most areas).  Starting in November our nights that used be daylight until 9 pm are now dark at 5:30 pm…ugh!  In March, our days are so long, and we love all the daytime to get “stuff” done or
to enjoy some fun events while it’s warm and sunny.

Seasonal depression increases often for many because of the cold and gloomy season. Circumstances are different for everyone, feelings surface during the holidays that are generally suppressed any other time of the year. While there is no specific reason, or clinical evaluation to add onto seasonal depression, it is very real.  For many, the questions arise, “why do I feel this way?” “What can I do differently to make this season a healthy one?”

Here are some tips to get through seasonal depression:

  • Get outside when the sun is shining.
  • While it may still be a little cold, the sun is still able to reduce the melatonin and lift your spirits.
  • Refocus – go for a walk, go to the gym, or you could begin journaling.
  • If money is tight, you can sit by the window with a warm cup of hot chocolate, herbal tea or coffee and reflect on all the good that is happening around you or watch a funny movie. Laughter is always a healthy option!
  • Get a good night’s sleep.  Try to keep a regular sleep schedule.

As a friendly reminder, be kind to yourself and others.  Pay attention to your mind, body, and spirit.  Depression, seasonal or otherwise, is not a one size fits all.  Your own self-care is a priority, and it will not match what people see on social media. Social media is not always truthful.

You are not alone, you may feel that way, however there are millions of people feeling the same way you do, remember…YOU DO YOU and If what you are doing is making you happy, and healthier then, you keep doing you!!

The above tips are only suggestions, if you need to seek medical attention, always consult with your physician if you have any questions or concerns.

Diabetes Awareness

November is diabetes awareness month.  To help understand the importance of keeping blood glucose levels well controlled we want to share a few key points with you to bring you into awareness.

  • Type 1 diabetes is not preventable.
  • Type 2 diabetes is often preventable with a healthy diet, regular exercise, maintaining normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use.
  • Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks and stroke.
  • Diabetes can cause lower limb amputation.
  • Only 50% of people with type 2 diabetes get the insulin they need.
  • Treatment is possible when diagnosed early enough to avoid complications.
  • Other screening that play a role in the diagnose is regular eye exams, foot assessment, and kidney disease.
  • Do you or a family or friend smoke?  Did you know that quitting smoking reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 30-40%?

How does diabetes affect the heart?

Great question!  There are blood vessels and nerves that control your heart.  When your blood sugar levels are too high, the effect can be damaging to those blood vessels and nerves. If you have diabetes, you are at greater risk for heart disease and high blood pressure which leads to other complications.  For example, high blood pressure increases the force of blood flow through your arteries therefore damaging the artery wall.  This increases your risk for a heart attack or stroke.

How do I prevent having a heart attack or stroke if I have diabetes?

It’s a lifestyle change.  Eat a healthy diet and aim for a healthy weight.  Get active.  Walk, ride a bike, take a stroll on the beach or in nature.  Find something that you enjoy that helps improve your blood flow. Manage your ABC’s – your A1C – Blood pressure – Cholesterol – Stop smoking (don’t start).  Manage your stress.

Always consult with your physician if you have any questions or concerns.

Living in Florida brings many benefits, but it also means being prepared for the potential threat of hurricanes. With their destructive power and unpredictable nature, hurricanes require careful planning and readiness to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property. In this blog post, we’ll explore essential steps for hurricane preparedness in Florida, helping you stay safe and secure when facing these powerful storms.

Understanding Hurricane Categories and Terminology:

Understanding Hurricane Categories and Terminology:

Hurricanes are classified into categories based on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, which measures a storm’s maximum sustained wind speed.

Understanding these categories will help you gauge the potential severity and expected impact of a hurricane.

  • Category 1 Hurricanes: These hurricanes have sustained winds ranging from 74 to 95 mph. While they are considered relatively weak, they can still cause damage, particularly to unanchored mobile homes, signs, and trees. Coastal flooding may occur due to storm surge.
  • Category 2 Hurricanes: With sustained winds between 96 and 110 mph, category 2 hurricanes can cause extensive damage. They can uproot trees, damage roofs, and cause power outages. Storm surge becomes more significant, posing a threat to coastal areas.
  • Category 3 Hurricanes: Category 3 hurricanes are classified as major hurricanes due to their sustained winds ranging from 111 to 129 mph. These storms can cause significant damage to homes, buildings, and infrastructure. Extensive flooding from storm surge is likely in coastal regions.
  • Category 4 Hurricanes: Considered extremely dangerous, category 4 hurricanes have sustained winds between 130 and 156 mph. They can cause severe damage to well-built homes, with roofs and exterior walls at risk of failure. Storm surge is particularly high and can penetrate several miles inland.
  • Category 5 Hurricanes: The most powerful hurricanes, category 5 storms have sustained winds of 157 mph or higher. They can cause catastrophic damage, destroying homes, buildings, and infrastructure. Storm surge can result in severe coastal flooding, reaching far inland.

Additionally, it’s essential to be familiar with common hurricane terminology:

  • Storm Surge: The abnormal rise of water generated by a hurricane’s winds that can inundate coastal areas. It poses a significant threat to life and property.
  • Eyewall: The ring of intense thunderstorms surrounding the eye of the hurricane. It is where the most severe winds and heaviest rainfall occur.
  • Tropical Depression: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of up to 38 mph.
  • Tropical Storm: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph.
  • Hurricane Watch: Issued when hurricane conditions are possible within the next 48 hours. It means that preparations should begin.
  • Hurricane Warning: Issued when hurricane conditions are expected within the next 36 hours. It means that preparations should be completed and actions taken to protect life and property.

Understanding these hurricane categories and terminology will help you comprehend weather reports, warnings, and advisories more effectively. Stay informed through reliable sources such as the National Hurricane Center, local meteorological services, and official emergency management agencies to ensure you’re adequately prepared for the potential impact of a hurricane.

Developing a Family Emergency Plan:

Having a well-thought-out family emergency plan is crucial for ensuring everyone’s safety and reducing stress during a hurricane.

Here are key steps to create an effective plan:

  1. Establish Communication Channels: Determine how your family will communicate during a hurricane when traditional methods may be disrupted. Ensure everyone has a list of emergency contact numbers stored in their phones and written down as a backup. Designate a central out-of-state contact that family members can call or message to provide updates and check in with each other.

  2. Identify Roles and Responsibilities: Assign specific responsibilities to each family member to ensure everyone knows what to do during an emergency. This can include tasks such as shutting off utilities, securing windows and doors, gathering important documents, and packing essential items.

  3. Evacuation Routes and Shelter Options: Identify the nearest evacuation routes and shelters in your area. Plan multiple evacuation routes in case some are blocked or inaccessible. Be aware of any special evacuation needs for family members with disabilities or pets. If staying with relatives or friends is an option, discuss this in advance.

  4. Prepare Emergency Kits: Assemble individual emergency kits for each family member with essential supplies. Include non-perishable food, water, medications, first aid supplies, personal hygiene items, flashlights, batteries, extra clothing, and important documents such as identification, insurance papers, and medical records.

  5. Review Safety Procedures: Teach family members about basic safety procedures during a hurricane, such as staying away from windows, taking cover in a small interior room, and listening to weather updates. Establish a safe meeting place in case you get separated and cannot return home.

  6. Practice the Plan: Regularly conduct drills and practice your family emergency plan. Simulate different scenarios to ensure everyone understands their roles and can execute the necessary actions efficiently. This practice will build confidence and familiarity, making it easier to respond during a real emergency.

  7. Stay Informed: Stay tuned to local authorities, weather updates, and official sources of information for the latest updates on the hurricane’s path and potential impact. Sign up for emergency alerts via text message or smartphone apps to receive real-time notifications.

Securing Your Home:

Living in Florida, it’s essential to take specific measures to fortify your home against the potential impact of hurricanes. By following these guidelines, you can minimize damage and increase the safety of your property:

  • Install Hurricane Shutters or Plywood Boards: Consider installing hurricane shutters on windows and doors as they provide the best protection. If shutters are not an option, pre-cut and label plywood boards that can be quickly installed when a storm is approaching. Ensure the boards are securely fastened with proper hardware.

  • Reinforce Garage Doors: Reinforce garage doors to withstand high winds. This can be done by installing a bracing system or strengthening the door with a retrofit kit. Weak garage doors can be a significant vulnerability during a hurricane, allowing wind to enter and potentially compromise the structural integrity of the house.

  • Clear Yard and Balcony: Trim trees and shrubs around your property to remove dead branches and reduce the risk of falling debris during a storm. Secure or bring inside any outdoor furniture, potted plants, or loose objects on your balcony or in your yard that could become projectiles in strong winds.

  • Inspect and Strengthen Roofing: Ensure your roof is in good condition by conducting regular inspections. Repair any loose or damaged shingles, and secure roof tiles if necessary. Consider reinforcing your roof with hurricane straps or clips to improve its resistance to high winds.

  • Reinforce Entry Doors: Strengthen entry doors, especially the one leading to the garage or outdoors, with heavy-duty deadbolt locks and security plates. Reinforcing doors can prevent them from being blown open during a hurricane, reducing the chances of wind and water entering your home.

  • Anchor Outdoor Structures: If you have a shed, gazebo, or other outdoor structures, anchor them securely to the ground to prevent them from being lifted or blown away by strong winds. Use hurricane straps or ground anchors designed for this purpose.

  • Review Insurance Coverage: Review your homeowners’ insurance policy to ensure you have adequate coverage for wind damage and flooding caused by hurricanes. Consider additional coverage if necessary, such as flood insurance, as standard homeowners’ policies may not cover flood-related damages.

  • Document Your Possessions: Take photographs or videos of your home and its contents before a hurricane strikes. This documentation can be helpful for insurance claims in case of damage or loss. Store these records in a safe place, preferably digitally, or keep copies with a trusted family member or friend.

Taking First Aid and CPR Classes: Enhancing Preparedness for Hurricane Season

By investing in first aid and CPR training, you equip yourself with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively to medical emergencies that may arise during hurricane season. Being prepared to provide immediate assistance can save lives and contribute to the overall safety and well-being of individuals and communities affected by hurricanes.

  • Importance of First Aid and CPR Training:
During hurricane season, the risk of injuries and medical emergencies can increase due to the potential impact of storms, flooding, and other hazards. Having the knowledge and skills to administer first aid and perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can be crucial in providing immediate assistance to yourself, your family, or others in need. Taking a certified first aid and CPR course equips you with the necessary skills to respond effectively during emergency situations.

  • Understanding Basic First Aid Techniques:
First aid training covers a range of essential skills, including wound care, controlling bleeding, managing fractures and sprains, treating burns, and recognizing signs of medical emergencies such as heart attacks or strokes. Understanding these techniques allows you to provide immediate care to individuals until professional medical help arrives, which can be critical during hurricane-related incidents when access to emergency services may be delayed.

  • Performing CPR and AED:
Cardiac arrest can occur unexpectedly, even during or after a hurricane. Learning CPR enables you to provide life-saving chest compressions and rescue breaths to individuals experiencing cardiac arrest. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are commonly available in public spaces, and knowing how to use them effectively can significantly increase the chances of survival for someone in cardiac distress.

Introduction

Ahoy, fellow adventurers! Whether you’re cruising the turquoise waters or angling for the catch of the day, setting sail on a boat in sunny Florida promises endless thrills. But as any seasoned mariner will tell you, safety should always be your first mate. Today, we’re diving into the world of basic first aid, equipping you with the knowledge you need to handle potential emergencies while out on the water. So grab a life jacket, and let’s embark on this journey of lifesaving know-how!

Your On-Board First Aid Kit

Assembling Your On-Board First Aid Kit, Your vessel should always be equipped with a well-stocked first aid kit, acting as your floating medical cabinet. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Adhesive Bandages: From minor scrapes to small cuts, adhesive bandages are your go-to for handling those pesky nautical nicks.

  • Sterile Gauze Pads: Essential for larger wounds or injuries that require more substantial coverage.

  • Antiseptic Solution or Wipes: Keep your wounds clean and free from potential infections.

  • Tweezers: An indispensable tool for removing splinters, sea urchin spines, or any other unwelcome hitchhikers.

  • Scissors: Useful for cutting tape, clothing, or bandages in case of emergency.

  • Elastic Bandages: Perfect for providing support to sprained joints or stabilizing fractures until you can reach shore.

  • Non-Latex Disposable Gloves: Protect yourself and your patient from any potential biohazards while administering first aid.

  • Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter pain medications can provide temporary relief for headaches, muscle aches, and minor pain.

  • Seasickness Medication: Combat the notorious seasickness with appropriate medications.

Dealing with Common Boat-Related Injuries

When you’re out on the water, accidents can happen.

Here are a few situations you may encounter and how to handle them:

Sunburns: Florida’s sun can be scorching! Apply sunscreen with a high SPF, wear protective clothing, and seek shade to avoid sunburns. If someone does get burned, apply aloe vera gel or a cooling lotion to soothe the skin.

Cuts and Scrapes: Cleanse the wound with clean water or an antiseptic solution, apply pressure with sterile gauze to stop bleeding, and cover it with an adhesive bandage or gauze pad.

Sprains and Strains: Rest the injured area, apply ice wrapped in a cloth to reduce swelling, and use elastic bandages to provide support. If the pain persists or if there’s a visible deformity, seek professional medical assistance.

Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke: Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioned areas, and wear breathable clothing. If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion (such as fatigue, nausea, or dizziness), move them to a cooler area, provide water, and fan them.

In the case of heatstroke (indicated by a high body temperature and altered mental state), immediately call for emergency medical assistance.

Know CPR

The Power of CPR and Calling for Help Sometimes, first aid alone won’t be enough. CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can make all the difference in critical situations.

Remember the following steps:

  • Call for Help: Contact emergency services or the nearest Coast Guard station for professional assistance immediately. If you have a marine VHF radio, tune to channel 16.
  • Perform Chest Compressions: Place the heel of your hand on the center of the person’s chest, interlace your fingers, and push hard and fast in a rhythmic manner. Aim for a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
  • Deliver Rescue Breaths: Tilt the person’s head back, pinch their nose shut, and cover their mouth with yours, making a tight seal. Give two rescue breaths and then resume chest compressions.
  • Continue CPR: Alternate between 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths until professional help arrives or the person starts breathing.

We highly recommend taking a first aid/CPR class. We offer many options and would love to help you feel confident on your next outing.

Outro

By arming yourself with these basic first aid techniques and knowledge, you’ll be better prepared to handle potential emergencies while enjoying the beauty of Florida’s waters.

Remember, safety should always be your anchor, and your willingness to learn and act in times of crisis can truly make a life-saving difference.

So set sail, enjoy the ocean breeze, but always keep a watchful eye on the well-being of yourself and your fellow adventurers.

Stay safe, bon voyage, and keep the spirit of adventure alive!

Learning CPR, first aid or EMT training can equip you with even more life-saving skills. So why not consider diving deeper into these topics to become a true hero on and off the water?

Until our next nautical rendezvous, fair winds, and calm seas, my fellow boating enthusiasts!

Why CPR and First Aid Training is Essential

Summer is just around the corner, and many families are already making plans for vacations, pool parties, and outdoor activities.

For babysitters and siblings who will be watching kids this summer, it’s important to be prepared for emergencies.

Accidents can happen anytime, anywhere, and being equipped with CPR and first aid skills can make all the difference in a life-or-death situation.

L.E.T.S. Specialized Training

At L.E.T.S. CPR, we offer specialized classes geared towards babysitters, brothers, and sisters who will be watching their siblings this summer.

Our CPR and first aid classes cover a range of topics, including:

  • How to perform CPR on infants, children, and adults
  • How to recognize and respond to choking
  • How to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • How to respond to common injuries such as cuts, burns, and sprains
  • How to use an AED (automated external defibrillator)

Confidence Building

Taking a CPR and first aid class can give you the confidence and skills you need to handle emergencies and can also make you a more attractive candidate for babysitting jobs.

In fact, many parents specifically seek out certified babysitters in CPR and first aid because they know that their children will be in good hands.

Even if you do not plan on babysitting for money, it is an extremely valuable skill to have if your children will home alone during the summer.

Summer Safety Tips

In addition to taking a CPR and first aid class, there are several other summer safety tips that babysitters and siblings should keep in mind:

  • Always supervise children when they’re in or near water, and make sure they’re wearing appropriate flotation devices.
  • Keep a first aid kit on hand at all times, and make sure you know how to use the items inside.
  • Protect children from the sun by applying sunscreen regularly, providing shade, and ensuring that they stay hydrated.
  • Teach children about stranger danger and the importance of never leaving the house without permission.

Ready to Sign Up?

By following these summer safety tips and taking a CPR and first aid class, you can help ensure that the children in your care stay safe and healthy all summer long. To sign up for a class with L.E.T.S., signup online or give us a call today.

The National Backorder of AEDs: Implications for Public Health and Safety https://letsavelives.com/the-national-backorder-of-aeds-implications-for-public-health-and-safety/ Thu, 06 Apr 2023 21:22:41 +0000 https://letsavelives.com/?p=1336 The national backorder of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) has serious implications for public health and safety.

The post The National Backorder of AEDs: Implications for Public Health and Safety appeared first on Landes Emergency Training Services.

]]>

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the world, another crisis has emerged in the medical field – the national backorder of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

An AED is a portable electronic device that diagnoses and treats life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation, through the delivery of a shock to the heart.

These devices are vital in saving lives during sudden cardiac arrest, which can occur at any time and to anyone, regardless of age or health.

L.E.T.S., a CPR/AED safety training company based in Sarasota, Florida, is well aware of the importance of AEDs in saving lives. Their mission is to provide high-quality CPR and AED training to individuals and organizations, with the goal of creating a safer community.

However, the national backorder of AEDs has made it difficult for L.E.T.S. and other organizations to fulfill their mission.

Factors Contributing to the Backorder of AEDs

The backorder of AEDs is due to a combination of factors, including increased demand, supply chain disruptions, and manufacturing delays.

As the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, many organizations and individuals became more aware of the importance of AEDs in saving lives. This led to a surge in demand for these devices, which quickly outstripped supply.

Additionally, disruptions in the global supply chain due to the pandemic, as well as manufacturing delays, have made it difficult for AED manufacturers to keep up with demand.

Implications for Public Health and Safety

The national backorder of AEDs has serious implications for public health and safety.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, with an estimated 350,000 deaths per year.

However, studies have shown that survival rates can be significantly improved with the timely use of an AED. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by 7-10%.

This means that quick access to AEDs is crucial in saving lives during sudden cardiac arrest.

What Can Organizations and Individuals Do?

Despite the challenges posed by the national backorder of AEDs, there are steps that organizations and individuals can take to ensure that they have access to these life-saving devices.

First, it is important to plan ahead and order AEDs well in advance. With the current demand for AEDs, it may take several months for orders to be fulfilled. By planning ahead, organizations can ensure that they have an adequate supply of AEDs on hand in case of an emergency.

Another option is to consider purchasing refurbished AEDs. Refurbished AEDs are devices that have been previously used but have been restored to like-new condition by a certified technician.

These devices are often available at a lower cost than new AEDs and can be a good option for organizations that are on a tight budget.

Finally, it is important to ensure that AEDs are properly maintained and serviced.

AEDs require regular maintenance and testing to ensure that they are functioning properly.

Organizations should work with a certified AED technician to develop a maintenance schedule and ensure that their AEDs are always in good working order.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the national backorder of AEDs is a serious issue that has significant implications for public health and safety.

Organizations and individuals can take steps to ensure that they have access to these life-saving devices, including planning ahead, considering refurbished AEDs, and maintaining their devices properly.

At L.E.T.S., we remain committed to our mission of creating a safer community through high-quality CPR and AED training.

At Landes Emergency Training Service in Sarasota, Florida, we know effective CPR is crucial in saving lives during sudden cardiac arrest.

This is a fantastic 3D animation video showcasing the importance of good, effective CPR to keep the brain and heart alive until an automated external defibrillator (AED) arrives.

Brain damage can start to set in in just 4 minutes after a sudden cardiac arrest and becomes irreversible after 10 minutes. CPR is the only chance of survival for the person while waiting for the AED to arrive.

Landes Emergency Training Service (L.E.T.S.) is committed to spreading awareness and public education on the importance of using an AED and performing effective CPR.

Share this video with your loved ones and friends to help us save more lives. Learn more about our training services on our class page.

About This Video

This 3D animation was designed to share life-saving information with the general public to demonstrate the importance of good, effective CPR!

Effective compressions create an artificial pump and send oxygenated blood to the brain to keep the brain alive. CPR also keeps blood and oxygen moving through the heart muscle itself so that it has the best chance of being successfully defibrillated when the AED arrives.

After a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, brain damage will start to set in within 4 minutes and is irreversible after 10 minutes. CPR is the person’s only chance of survival while waiting for an automated external defibrillator to arrive.

Action First Aid is committed to widespread access, awareness and public education about when and how to use an AED and perform effective CPR. Please share this video with all of your loved ones and friends as together we truly have the power to save more lives! Learn more at https://www.actionfirstaid.ca/

About 900 Americans die every DAY due to sudden cardiac arrest. This number is on a current increase after years of decline, per American Heart Association (AHA).

Cardiac arrest can affect any age, at any time, and at any location, including your business or office.

Sudden cardiac arrest is exactly as it sounds, often sudden and without any warning. There are several reasons why this may occur in a person, but the important takeaway is that defibrillation and CPR are needed AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to save the victim’s life.

As a Firefighter Paramedic in Charlotte County, I have literally seen the difference between the outcomes of patients who suffer cardiac arrest and receive CPR immediately and those who receive CPR and AED usage before I arrive in the ambulance.

Out-of-Hospital Survival Rates

From 2005 to 2007, a study was performed that resulted in some very amazing results.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests show a significant increase in survival percentages for cardiac arrest victims that received an AED shock.

38% of victims shocked with an AED survived hospital discharge, whereas those who received CPR only survived 9% of the time.

Finally, of those who received no CPR or defibrillation, only 7% survived.

So clearly AEDs save lives, but how does the speed of defibrillation affect the survival rate?

The survival rate from cardiac arrest drops by 7–10% for every minute that a patient has to wait for defibrillation.

Myth #1: AEDs are too expensive.

An AED really is not expensive when you factor in the potential lives it can save. Not to mention that if you place it in a predominant area, it is a great piece of equipment that instills confidence in your business.

I specifically look for AEDs when I join gyms or go to facilities.

AEDs typically range in cost depending on availability and options, but they typically run between $1,200 – $3,000.

At L.E.T.S., we promote and sell many brands of AEDs; however, due to our experience, we tend to recommend Zoll and Cardiac Science AEDs more than the other options. If you contact us, we will discuss your specific use case and ensure you have the right product even if you do not purchase from us.

That is how important we feel getting AEDs into the community is.

L.E.T.S. also offers an annual inspection schedule details are available on this flyer. The price for this service is $349.00/year and gives us all the headaches and responsibility to ensure your AED is always ready to be used.

Included in that price is an AED loaner, so your business or office is never without protection.

Myth #2: AEDs Increase liability risks.

We often hear concerns about liability risks for business owners who decide to place AEDs in their locations.

You are protected by several laws (Florida Statute 401.2915 -Automated external defibrillators and FS 768.13 Good Samaritan Act; immunity from civil liability.) and Florida legal precedents that protect you and anyone who attempts to use an AED.

It is the intent of the Legislature that an automated external defibrillator may be used by any person for the purpose of saving the life of another person in cardiac arrest. In order to achieve that goal, the Legislature intends to encourage training in lifesaving first aid and set standards for and encourage the use of automated external defibrillators.

In the legal opinions published, there is no said responsibility for a good Samaritan to act, and in order to encourage action without worry, the Good Samaritan Act can be summarized as “Any person, including those licensed to practice medicine, who gratuitously and in good faith renders emergency care or treatment either in direct response to emergency situations related to and arising out of a public health emergency… shall not be held liable for any civil damages as a result of such care or treatment or as a result of any act or failure to act in providing or arranging further medical treatment where the person acts as an ordinary reasonably prudent person would have acted under the same or similar circumstances.”

We recommend training your employees on the AEDs use and CPR, which we will do at a discounted rate for purchasers of AEDs.

However, you are not required to act; anything you do is above and beyond for the care of fellow citizens.

Now I do have to put a disclaimer; I am not a lawyer. Nor is any advice in this blog intended to replace the advice of legal counsel. I am sharing my personal experiences and research in this matter, which you can verify via court document searches and other experiences.

Myth #3: AEDs are complicated to use.

AEDs are designed for simplicity of use, as the machine does all the work. You open it up, turn it on, and they walk you verbally through the process of applying AED and performing CPR. AEDs are designed for people with no medical training.

As I said earlier, we always recommend training which we can provide in your location or at ours for a discounted rate for those who buy AEDs.

Conclusion

You have learned that AEDs are scientifically proven to provide the best potential outcomes for people suffering sudden cardiac arrest. We have debunked several myths that tend to prevent businesses from considering the purchase of AEDs and installing them in their locations.

Without a doubt, AEDs are not only life-saving pieces of equipment, but they also offer comfort and instill confidence in your existing and potential customers.

Be proud of your AED and safety programs in place, and do not be fearful of liability when it comes to saving a life.

PLEASE consider adding an AED to your location; we will make it painless and help you maximize the positive press and potentially life-saving abilities.
